RAINCOAST ORCHIDS

Raincoast Orchids and the Orchid Recovery Project are located on the grounds of Raincoast Farms. We currently maintain two greenhouses full time: a recovery greenhouse for donated Phalaenopsis and a larger greenhouse with a unique collection of species and hybrid orchids and tropical plants.

Orchid Recovery Project

The Orchid Recovery Project started in 2013. After the success of bringing two donated Phalaenopsis plants into bloom, neighbors, friends and acquaintances began to bring their non-blooming and sometimes ready for the compost heap plants to us to see if we could rehabilitate them. Soon we were overwhelmed with orchids and space was at a premium. In order to maintain the space required for the growing collection, recovered plants were donated to our local hospital, physician offices, hospice, and to anyone recovering from an illness or accident.

As of December 2022, over 1,300 plants have been donated to the project and 500 have been placed with care giving facilities and private individuals in recovery.

Additional donated orchids are needed in order for the program to continue. To donate your plant, please send an email to 43nantucket43@gmail.com or call/text Dick Schneider 360.531.0173 and we will provide you with delivery or shipping instructions.

Orchid Collection

We have over 500 plants in active cultivation in the Orchid Collection greenhouse. These are comprised of species and hybrid specimens from the oncidium, cattleya, vanda, miltonia, angraecum, dendrobium, pathiopendulum, bulbophyllum and coelogyne families plus a few miscellaneous interesting specimens. The orchid greenhouse also houses a collection of tropical plants such as ferns, anthuriums, bromeliads, nepenthes and begonias. These are all excellent companion plants for orchids as they flourish under similar conditions of temperature, humidity, light and fertilizer application.

While plants are not for sale from the Orchid Collection, we are always interested in trading top quality specimens with other committed growers and collectors. We can be reached by email at 43nantucket43@gmail.com
